Nestled in the heart of Historic Downtown Bellefontaine, Ohio, the Main Street Marketplace is more than just a building—it’s a piece of the community’s fabric. This storied property has been a cornerstone of local commerce and connection for generations. Once a bustling C.G. Murphy’s store and later The Centre City Mall, this space has seen Bellefontaine through decades of transformation. And in 2012, Jason Duff, CEO of Small Nation, took on the challenge of reimagining its potential.
Today, The Marketplace stands as a vibrant hub for locals and visitors alike, offering an array of unique experiences under one roof. From Logan County’s premiere salon experience to relaxing massages, a boutique, a photography studio, and a fun spot for good eats with friends, the Marketplace is a destination where history meets modern-day charm.
But as with any historic property, maintaining and enhancing its appeal comes with challenges and opportunities.
Challenges to Overcome
1. An Aging Awning in Need of Replacement
The original awning, though functional in its time, had started to show its age. It detracted from the Marketplace’s welcoming vibe and no longer complemented the vibrant businesses within. A fresh, stylish awning would not only modernize the façade but also help the building stand out.
2. A Mid-Block Location and Hidden Gems Inside
One of the Marketplace’s greatest strengths—the incredible variety of businesses inside—was also a hidden secret to many. Its mid-block position and limited visibility meant that potential visitors often walked past without realizing what awaited them inside.
3. Dark Entrance Created by Tinted Storefront Glass and a Deep Awning
The tinted glass, shadows cast by the awning, and a deeply recessed entry created a less inviting atmosphere. Brightening this entrance was key to drawing people in and highlighting the energy and activity within the building.
4. Mismatched Brick Veneer
The lower brick veneer, added during a previous renovation, did not quite match the upper historic brickwork. This disconnect interrupted the visual harmony of the building and diminished its overall curb appeal.
A Vision for the Future
The revitalization of The Marketplace facade was not just about addressing these challenges—it was about amplifying its charm, enhancing the visitor experience, and honoring the property’s history. Here's how we did it:
• Brightening the Entrance: Imagine walking down Main Street and being greeted by a warm, well-lit entrance that showcases the Marketplace’s energy. We updated the awning with a charming retro-stripe fabric selection that fits like a great pair of blue jeans, painted the lower brick veneer in a bold orange that draws the eye in without competing with the upper historic brick, and replaced the old pavers at the recessed entry with a fun and funky terrazzo-look porcelain tile. The result? The entrance is so much more alive and inviting.
• Wayfinding and Visibility: I cannot stress enough the importance of signage and exterior lighting! From uplighting to lit logo signs to projecting banners to creative window displays, small but impactful updates will ensure passersby can’t miss the diverse mix of businesses inside.
Why It Matters
Revitalizing properties like The Marketplace isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about preserving history, fostering community, and creating spaces where people want to gather, shop, and connect. In a world that often leans toward the disposable, investments in restoration remind us of the value of longevity and legacy.
As Bellefontaine continues to grow and thrive, The Marketplace remains a symbol of what’s possible when we honor our past while building for the future. Whether you’re grabbing lunch, getting pampered, or simply enjoying a stroll through downtown, this landmark is ready to welcome you—with fresh energy and timeless charm.
